Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Hard Work

You have to put in many, many, many tiny efforts that nobody sees or appreciates before you achieve anything worthwhile ~ Brian Tracy

According to Brian Tracy, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. We have learned that every exercise of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline at the same time, just as every weakness in self-discipline weakens you in other disciplines as well.

Today, my articles on self-discipline continue as we focus on the Discipline Of Hard Work, with a helping hand from Brian Tracy.

I have always had tremendous admiration for those that believe in working hard and NOT hardly working.
unfortunately, it’s a rare trait. I’ve seen and worked with far more individuals that do not give it everything they have than the other way around.

We live in a world where a growing number of people need and expect instant gratification and they will take any shortcut they can to get the job done, even if it means negative long term consequences. This philosophy applies to all facets of life…and these tactics, even if they yield positive results initially will ususally lead to damaging long term results.

Even now, in Network marketing, we see all the opportunities promising overnight wealth and instant deposits into your bank account.
True monetary rewards are a result of hard work and perseverance every day over time and does not happen overnight. It requires a consistent and persistent effort and is a process.

The fact is, nothing replaces hard work, and there are no shortcuts in life.
In my career as a Manager, I have hired a number of employees and the most important trait I look for in those I hire in any capacity is their work ethic. I’ll take a hard worker who might need some training, over an “expert” who lacks a work ethic any day.
They will pay far more dividends in the long term every time.

Goal: Develop a reputation for being a hard, hard worker. “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” (Thomas Jefferson)

Now, let’s hear from Brian Tracy and how he describes this Discipline…

  •  The average work week in America is 32 hours.
  •  The average person wastes 50% of the workday in idle chit-chatting with co-workers, extended coffee breaks and luncheons, personal business, reading the newspaper and surfing the internet.
  • Rule: Work all the time you work!
  • Start one hour earlier, and immediately get to work.
  • Work harder, through your lunch hour, all day long; don’t waste time.
  • Work one hour later; be the last to leave. Use this time to wrap up all your work and plan your next day. Three extra hours of work will translate into 6-8 hours of productivity.
  • Ask; what is the most valuable use of my time right now? Whatever your answer, work on that every hour of every day.
  • If you get distracted, or interrupted, repeat over and over, “Back to work! Back to work! Back to work!”

Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Continuous Learning

“No one lives long enough to learn everything they need to learn starting from scratch. To be successful, we absolutely, positively have to find people who have already paid the price to learn the things that we need to learn to achieve our goals.” ~ Brian Tracy

Whether you work online or offline and you are looking for solutions to problems or if you have questions, the answers can usually be found when you are willing to learn and practice something new and different.

When you learn how to use the incredible power of your mind and you apply new ideas and information, you will be able to become a Leader in your field and gain the respect of those in your Industry.

We need to embrace never ending growth and development, continuous learning, and constant improvement. If you make the commitment to this discipline, you will be able to build a better self, team, organization, and world.

We can become exceptional at any skill if we are willing to learn, grow, improve and change. If you want to become more effective, we simply must continue to improve, not just maintain the status quo.

It takes a certain mindset to be able to remain on the path of continuous learning, but those that persevere will accomplish their goals and dreams and become Leaders in the field of their choice. The good news is that you can choose that path everyday….but, your first decision is to become a continuous learner.

So remember, you can’t get better results if you choose to apply your current knowledge and abilities. If you want to earn more in the future, you must learn and apply new methods and techniques.

In the following video by Brian Tracy, you will find out why it is so important to be a Continuous Learner…

According to Brian Tracy, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. Now, let’s hear what Brian Tracy says as we focus on the Discipline Of Continuous Learning …

“To earn more you must learn more.”

  • Leaders Are Readers .. Read in your field 30-60 minutes each day. This will translate into one book per week, 50 books per year.
  • Listen And Learn… Listen to CD’s in your car as you drive from place to place. This will amount to 500-1000 hours per year.
  • Learn From The Experts… Attend seminars and take courses given by experts in your field. One idea from one course can save you years of hard work.
  • The average income in America increases at 3% per annum. With compound interest, the average person doubles their income every 22 years.
  • With the additional knowledge and skill you can apply to get better results, you increase your income at 10%, 15% and even 25% per year.

*10% per annum increase means that you double your income in 7.2 years.

*25% increase per annum means that you double your income in 2 years and 8 months.

  • Work on yourself as if your future depends on it, because it does.

Personal development and quality business training has never been more important than it is today.

Consider these facts:

  • The average person will increase their salary by only 2-3% annually.
  • Each year inflation increases by approximately 2-3% annually.
  • That means that, without lifelong learning, it’s virtually impossible for the average person to get ahead.

However…

  • Top Achievers, people who are continually learning and growing, DOUBLE their income every 3-5 years.
  • This is why the top 10-20% increase their incomes by an average of 11% annually and earn more than the bottom 80%!
  • To separate yourself from the pack, you often need to know just one additional skill…and that will make all the difference in your pay scale.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can immediately…

1) Make a plan to become a little bit better every single day. Learn and apply one new idea each day to help you to become more productive and effective at your work. The incremental effect will amaze you.

2)  Be patient. Don’t expect overnight changes or instant results. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare. Become a little bit better each day and your future will take care of itself.

Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Clear Thinking

“Thinking is the hardest discipline of all.” ~ Thomas Edison

Thoughts have power, are under your control, and can be used wisely or unwisely. Accurate thinkers accept no type of thought, until it is carefully analyzed. Clear thinkers are the masters of their emotions.

Accurate thought involves two basic fundamentals. First you must separate facts from information. Second you must separate facts into two classes (The important and unimportant.) Accurate thinkers allow no one to do their thinking for them.

We have all heard about Mind Over Matter. Mind Power is essential to everything we do. Your ability to cut through the clutter to make great decisions is based on it.

By now, I am sure that everyone reading this has heard about the Law of Attraction. Mind Power is the creative energy, that makes it all happen. The more you can focus your mind and concentrate your attention on whatever it is that you want to create, the easier it is to achieve the results you desire.

Focus and Concentration

Perhaps the two most important qualities of success are focus and concentration. Focus means knowing exactly what it is you want and concentration means having the discipline to concentrate single-mindedly on one thing, the most important thing, until it is complete.

If you have these qualities, and both of these qualities are learned through practice, you can accomplish virtually anything. There are no limits on your future if you can focus and concentrate every hour of every single day.

The best test of your mind power is your ability to concentrate and focus on something for a specific period of time. The longer you can hold your focus on something without being distracted the better.

Develop Decision Making Power ..

Our decisions shape our lives. Whether we rise to great success or head down to failure, it comes from the decisions we make (and the actions we take). We all make some decisions all day long, consciously and unconsciously.. about important and not so important things. The fact is the decisions we make always give us some results and consequences.

Clear and accurate thinkers are the masters of their emotions. In the following video by Napoleon Hill, you will hear WHY accurate thinking is critical to your success.

According to Brian Tracy, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. We have learned that every exercise of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline at the same time, just as every weakness in self-discipline weakens you in other disciplines as well.

Now, let’s hear what Brian Tracy says as we focus on the Discipline Of Clear Thinking…

It has been said that there are three types of people. There are those who think (The small minority); there are those that think they think, then there are those who would rather die than think.

  • Take time to think though the critical issues and problems in your life. Put aside long, unbroken chunks of time, thirty, sixty and then ninety minutes. Peter Drucker said that, “Fast people decisions are usually wrong people decisions.” In addition, fast decisions with regard to your family, career, money or any other major issue are usually wrong decisions.
  • Sit quietly for 30-60 minutes to think. Practice solitude on a regular basis. “Go into the silence.”
  • Whenever you practice solitude for more than thirty minutes, you activate your super conscious mind and trigger your intuition. You get it right from the “still, small, silent voice within.”
  • To think better, take a pad of paper and write down every detail of the problem situation you are facing. Sometimes, the right thing to do immerges as you write down the details.
  • Aristotle once said that wisdom (The ability to make good decisions) is a combination of experience plus reflection. The more time that you take to think about your experiences, the more vital lessons you will gain from them.
  • Go for a walk or exercise for 30-60 minutes. Very often when you are exercising, you will get insights or ideas that help you to think better and make better decisions.
  • Talk your situation over with someone else who you like and trust, and who is not emotionally involved. Very often, a different perspective can totally change your viewpoint.
  • Always ask, “What are my assumptions?” What is it that you are assuming to be true about the situation?
  • What if your assumptions were wrong? What if you were preceded on the basis of false information? Always be open to the possibility that you could be completely wrong in your current course of action. Be open to doing something completely different.

Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Persistence

“No man ever achieved worthwhile success who did not, at one time or another, find himself with at least one foot hanging well over the brink of failure. One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat.” ~ Napoleon Hill

According to Brian Tracy, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. We have learned that every exercise of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline at the same time, just as every weakness in self-discipline weakens you in other disciplines as well.

Today, my articles on self-discipline continue as we focus on the Discipline Of Persistence.

Definition of PERSISTENCE: continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. Firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. The continued or prolonged existence of something.

The Value Of Persistence

Long term, consistent success in any endeavor requires persistence. With enough persistence, anything is possible. You will find it to be a quality that is more important to your overall success than skill or knowledge or the right connections. The ability to persist is the ability to win.

Persistence is a discipline that is available to anyone. If you have that burning desire within you, it can’t be taken away.
Forget about past failures, your ability to persist is available to you whenever you choose to exercise that discipline and for the duration that you choose to benefit from it.

Sadly, even though the power of persistence is available to anyone, far too few people fully utilize what they have at their disposal.
Those who do, separate themselves from the pack and achieve their goals and dreams.

But, be advised… Persistence takes effort, just like anything of true value. Persistence requires intention, focus and commitment. It is not easy, but will be well worth your effort.

Thomas Edison claimed to have failed over 10,000 times while trying to invent electricity. How was he able to stay so committed to achieving his desired goal after so much failure? His legacy as one of the greatest inventors of all time depended on him inventing electricity.

Edison believed that every failure he experienced was just bringing him closer to finding the solution to his problem. How many people would have quit when facing the same obstacles?

The Lesson Learned

If you desire to become more persistent, you must first truly understand the absolute value of your Persistence. It is not enough to just read about it, but you must learn from real life experience. You must develop the discipline of persistence and utilize it if you genuinely want to understand the value and reap the benefits.

** The inspiring story of the Bamboo tree is much like Life itself – you have to have faith, belief and PERSISTENCE. In becoming a successful entrepreneur, growing company, or even growing as a person, remember to always be watering your tree, planting roots, and building your foundation… With persistence, rewards will follow! Never give up!

Now, let’s hear from Brian Tracy and how he describes this Principle…

The Discipline of Persistence:

  • The greatest test of self-discipline is when you persist in the face of adversity, and you drive yourself forward to complete your tasks 100%, no matter how you feel.
  • Your persistence is the measure of your belief in yourself, and in what you are doing.
  • The more you believe in the goodness and rightness of what you are doing, the more you will persist.
  • The more you persist, the more you will tend to believe in yourself and what you are doing. The principles are reversible!
  • Persistence is actually self-discipline in action.
  • Self-discipline leads to self-esteem, a greater sense of personal power, which leads to greater persistence, which leads to even greater self-discipline in an upward spiral.
  • “Persistence is to the character of man or woman as carbon is to steel.” (Napoleon Hill)
  • You actually make yourself into a better, stronger person by persisting when you feel like quitting.

Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Daily Goal-Setting

“Your ability to set goals is the master skill of success. Goals unlock your positive mind and release ideas and energy for goal attainment. Without goals, you simply drift and flow on the currents of life. With goals, you fly like an arrow, straight and true to your target.” ~ Brian Tracy

In Brian Tracy’s Report The Miracle of Self-Discipline, we hear about the importance of focus and concentration in your overall success.

According to the report, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. It turns out that every exercise of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline at the same time, just as every weakness in self-discipline weakens you in other disciplines as well.

Today, we are going to focus on the Discipline Of Daily Goal Setting with a little help from Brian Tracy’s 7-Step Goal Setting Model….

** In this blog, you will find many posts with content from Brian Tracy who has been one of my Mentors for quite some time. The goal of the Personal Development part of this blog is to provide you with the BEST possible content. That is achieved by presenting you with Brian Tracy content in many instances…I hope you enjoy the read and the video…

Goal setting has 7 Steps.…Watch this video where Brian will give you a step by step guide to achieving your goals.

7-Step Goal Setting Model

Here is the basic seven-step model of goal setting. You can use this like breathing in and breathing out on a regular basis to accelerate your attainment of any goal you can imagine for yourself.

Step One:

Decide exactly what you want.

This immediately moves you into a separate category of people because most people have no idea of what they really want.

Clarity is the most important single quality of goal-setting and perhaps the most important single quality of success. Decide exactly what you want in each area of your life. Instead of fuzzy goals like more money, better health and happiness, be specific about exactly how much more money you want to earn in a specific period of time and combine that with exactly what level of health and fitness you desire.

Most people are unconsciously preoccupied with the fear of failure. It is the greatest single obstacle to success in adult life. And the fear of failure can work on you unconsciously by blocking you from setting clear specific goals.

Why? Well, if you don’t set clear, specific goals, then you can’t fail to achieve them. So your subconscious mind is actually protecting you by helping you to avoid failure.

You must resist and overcome this tendency by having the courage to be bold and specific about exactly what you want.

Step Two:

Write your goal down on paper.

Only three percent of living Americans, or adults anywhere for that matter, have written goals. Everyone else that thinks about a written goal and plans to write them down, someday. But they never get around to it. Most people spend more time making a list of groceries before they go shopping or planning a vacation than they do in planning their lives. But again, this is not for you. Success begins with a pad of paper, a pen and a few minutes of your time. One of the most important keys to success is to “think on paper.”

All successful people “think on paper.” And here are two important points. If you cannot write it down clearly and specifically on a piece of paper, then it means that you are not really clear about it yourself. Perhaps you don’t even want it. What is worse, it may be that you are afraid that you may not attain it. Nonetheless, a goal that is written down is merely a fantasy or a wish. A goal that is clearly written and described on a piece of paper takes on a power of its own, it is now something concrete that you can touch and feel and work with.

The second principle of writing goals down is that something miraculous happens between the head and the hand. When you actually write a goal down, it is as if you are programming it into your subconscious mind and activating a whole series of mental powers that will enable you to accomplish more than you ever dreamed of. By writing it down you intensify your desire for the goal and you increase your belief that the goal is possible.

You begin to expect to achieve the goal and you start to attract people and circumstances into your life that are consistent with the attainment of the goal. Writing your goal down is one of the most amazing of all goal-setting skills and it is a key to your success.

Step Three:

Set a deadline.

If it is a large goal, set a series of sub-deadlines. A deadline acts as a “forcing system” on your subconscious mind and begins to move you toward your goal rapidly while it moves your goal toward you.

Sometimes people ask me, “What if I set a goal and I don’t achieve it by the deadline?” The answer is simple. Set another deadline.

Remember, a deadline is a guess-timate of when you will achieve it. Sometimes you will achieve your goal well in advance of your deadline. Sometimes goals will take much longer than you expect. But you must have a target time before you set off.

It is like making a reservation at a restaurant. You may be five minutes early or five minutes late, but you always have a specific time for which your dinner is reserved.

Step Four:

Make a list of everything you could possibly think of that you will have to do to achieve your goal.

The more comprehensive your list, the more motivated you will become, the more intense will be your desire and the more you will believe it possible.

One of the things that hold people back is even if they get to the point of a written goal; they do not take the time to lay out a list of all the little things they will have to do to get there. And with additional experience, you will add new items to your list until it finally becomes complete.

Step Five:

Take your list and organize it into a plan.

A plan is really quite simple. It is a list organized by priority and importance. You decide what you will do first and what you will do later. You decide what is more important and what is less important. And most of all, you decide upon the one thing that is more important than anything else that you can do immediately to begin moving more rapidly towards your goal.

Step Six:

For you to “take action!”

This is the big killer for most people. They are procrastinators. They have great ideas combined with great hopes and dreams. They may even get to the point of writing down their goals. But when it comes to taking action, they always have a reason or excuse to procrastinate to put it off until a later time. However, as the Bible says, “Faith without deeds is dead.”

It is when you launch toward your goal that you begin to feel the desire and power that goes along with goal setting. And once you have launched toward your goal, it is much easier for you to continue moving in that direction.

Step Seven:

Do something every day to move you toward your major goal.

Never let a day go by without you engaging in some action that helps you move another step in the direction of what you really, really want in life.

Remember, you can’t hit a target that you can’t see. And if you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.

The simple seven step act of deciding exactly what you want, writing it down, setting a deadline, making a list, organizing the list into a plan, taking action on the most important item on your list and then doing something every day towards your goal will change your life and your future in ways that you cannot even dream of today.

How Do You Develop The Habit Of Self-Discipline?

“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.” ~Napolean Hill

Your ability to develop the habit of self-discipline will contribute more to your success than any other quality of character.

** (Don’t forget to claim your FREE Report at the end of the post)

Self-discipline is the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state.

Self discipline requires getting out of your comfort zone and expanding your thoughts and your horizons. In order to produce different results, we must grow. In order to grow, you must first have the desire to learn.

If you don’t expand your mind, you cannot achieve new levels of achievement and success in your life.

Do not continue on the same path that got you the results you already have, do something different.

Self-discipline involves acting according to what you think instead of how you feel in the moment.
It involves sacrificing the pleasure and excitement of the moment for what matters most in life and delaying your gratification.

Make no mistake,  self-discipline is often extremely difficult.

If you struggle with self-discipline, you will be happy to know that it can be developed.

Commitment to Self-Discipline

It is not enough to simply write out your goals and values. You must make an internal commitment to them

Discipline yourself…

stop doing the things you have always done and make the decision NOW to eat right, get healthy, study what successful people do and learn from those who have already achieved what you desire.

You will be amazed at what you can accomplish and the things that you can give up to get there, like watching TV and listening to all the negativity.

Why is it that some people are extremely successful, while other more talented and gifted people remain average and mediocre?

Imagine what you could accomplish if you could discipline yourself to follow through on your best intentions no matter what.
Do you want Better health, weight loss, more money ?

Without self-discipline that intention won’t manifest itself, but with sufficient self-discipline, it WILL.
When you master the art of self-discipline, you will reach the point that when you make a conscious decision, it’s virtually guaranteed you’ll follow through on it.

Self-discipline is one of many personal development tools available to you. Self-discipline is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger you become. The less you train it, the weaker you become.

Monitor Yourself Internally

Self-talk can also be extremely beneficial if you have control of it. When you find yourself being tested, I suggest you talk to yourself, encourage yourself and motivate yourself. After all, positive self-talk and affirmations have the ability to remind you of your goals, call up courage, reinforce your commitment and keep you conscious of the task at hand.

Self-discipline is the one skill that’s indispensable for a successful, happy life. Don’t go another day without it—especially when Brian Tracy makes it so easy to achieve. Enjoy the following video.

Here are 5 disciplines as discussed by Brian Tracy you must develop if you want to achieve all that is possible for you. You can learn these disciplines through practice and repetition until they become automatic.

1. Goal Setting
Every morning, take three to five minutes to write out your top goals in the present tense.

This daily goal writing will activate your mental powers. It will stimulate your mind and make you more alert. Throughout the day, you will see opportunities and possibilities to move more rapidly toward your goals.

2. Planning and Organizing
Take a few minutes, preferably the night before, to plan out every activity of the coming day. Always work from a list. Always think on paper. This is one of the most powerful and important disciplines of all for high performance.

3. Priority Setting
