Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Daily Time Management

time (2)

“The purpose of time management and getting more done in less time is to enable you to spend more face time with the people you care about and doing the things that give you the greatest amount of joy in life.” ~ Brian Tracy

According to Brian Tracy, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. We have learned that every exercise of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline at the same time, just as every weakness in self-discipline weakens you in other disciplines as well.

Today, my articles on self-discipline continue as we focus on the Discipline Of Daily Time Management with a little help from Brian Tracy….( be sure to claim your FREE gift posted below the video )

Time management is no easy task. A good time management plan will actually take time to develop and implement. However, be aware that even though you spend much time planning and managing your use of time, it will prove to be an effort that will pay dividends to you…

Because, good time management is the only way to successfully approach any project. This will also allow you to free up time for other leisure activities as you learn to make more productive use of your time.

To achieve all your goals and become everything you are capable of becoming you must get your time under control.
Psychologists generally agree that a “sense of control” is the key to feelings of happiness, confidence, power, and personal well-being.
A sense of control is only possible when you practice excellent time management skills. To change or improve your life in any way, you have to make new choices and new decisions that are more in alignment with who you really are and what you really want.

It doesn’t matter if you are an adult, a teenager, a Home Based entrepreneur or you work in an office, if you master the art of  Time Management… you WILL reap the benefits.

Watch this video where Brian will give you some important tips that will assist in your time management discipline.

* As a Special Gift for being a valued visitor to my blog, I would like to give you a very valuable resource.. a 25 page transcription of Brian’s Eat That Frog”

Rule: “Every minute spent in planning saves ten minutes in execution.”
The more you plan, the better you use your time, and the more you accomplish.

1. Begin by making a list of everything that you have to do. The best time to write your daily list is the night before so that your subconscious can work on it while you sleep.

2. Organize the list by priority before starting work. The basic tool of time management is a list, organized by priority, and used as a constant tool for personal management. The fact is that you can’t manage time; you can only manage yourself. That is why time management requires self-discipline, self-control, and self-mastery.

3. Practice the 80/20 rule, which says that 80% of your results come from 20% of your activities.

4. Use the ABCDE method to set priorities. This is based on considering the consequences of doing or not doing a particular task.  An “A” activity is something that moves you toward your goal, the faster and more directly the better. A “B” activity is an activity that does not move you toward a goal that is important to you.

A = Must do – serious consequences for non-completion
B = Should do – mild consequences for non-completion
C = Nice to do – no consequences for non-completion
D = Delegate – everything possible
E = Eliminate – everything you can to free up more time

5. Organize your list by A-1, A-2, A-3, and so on.

6. Start on your A-1 task first thing in the morning.

7. Discipline yourself to concentrate single-mindedly on your A-1 task until it is 100% complete.

8.The discipline of good time management spreads to all your other disciplines. It has immediate payoff in improved results, and long term payoff in terms of the quality of your life work.

Action Exercise

Make a list of everything you would like to be, do, or have in the months and years ahead. Analyze your list and select those items that can have the greatest possible consequences in your life.

Time Management: Ten Ways to Expand Your Productivity

time

“Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.” ~ Jim Rohn

We all have the same 24 hours in each day. So, why are some people able to accomplish so much more in the same time frame ?

Are these people special, have some hidden talent or work harder ?

The secret to getting more done without necessarily working harder than others is proper time management. Many successful and skilled people struggle to manage their time and end up less productive than people with excellent time management skills.

Time management allows you to get more done with less effort.

You can also reduce the stress that goes along with having to finish multiple tasks at the same time.

The following is an article by Ann Rusnak- The Time Diva

Want to gain more control over your time? Try these time management tips.

1. Gain Time by Planning Ahead

Resist the temptation to rush right into doing something. 15 minutes of daily planning can immensely improve your productivity while reducing crisis management and stress.

2. Decide what You Want

Before you can get anything done, you need to know what you want to accomplish. Goals will provide a direction on where to spend your time.

3. Stay Flexible

Even the best laid plans can totally awry if you over plan. Allow breathing room for unexpected interruptions and opportunities

4. Take 5 Minute Power Breaks

Five minute power breaks can invigorate and boost energy levels. Take plenty of during day. You can stretch, daydream, get out of the office, motivate yourself by reading quotes or browse through a catalog. The important thing is to disconnect and unplug for what you where doing.

5. Are You A Perfectionist?

Perfectionism can really drain your time. Adopt the attitude of Done is Good and remember you can always go back and tweak it later.

6. Make Friends with the Word NO

This is where planning and goals become invaluable. Planning show you how much available time is in your day, making it easier for you to say NO to unimportant tasks.

7. Know Your Biological Prime Time

Are you morning, a night or late afternoon person? What time of day are you at your best? Knowing when your best time zone occurs, you can plan your higher priority activities during that time.

8. Set Your Priorities

Not all activities and task are equal. Use the 80/20 rule when prioritizing your task. Select the top 20 percent that will bring you the highest reward. Put those activities at the top of your list.

9. Join Procrastination Anonymous

Overwhelm can cause procrastination. When you don’t know where to start, its easy to put off starting at all. Reduce overwhelm by breaking projects down into 15-minute tasks. (Remember Step 1, planning?) Complete those 15 minute tasks and the project will seem much easier.

10. Give Yourself A Reward

Celebrate all your wins even the smallest. Promise yourself a reward for completing a task or project. Most importantly keep that promise.

Time Management and The Home Based Business Entrepreneur

time-management

“The purpose of time management and getting more done in less time is to enable you to spend more face time with the people you care about and doing the things that give you the greatest amount of joy in life.” ~ Brian Tracy

Time management skills are essential for anyone who wants to achieve success. How you manage your time will determine how fast you will succeed in your endeavor.

People think that managing your time will make you too rigid and inflexible.

The reality is that many people hide behind this false idea and use it as an excuse for not having the self discipline they need to succeed. The fact is that people who are disorganized often suffer a good deal of stress. It turns out that the better organized you are, the more time and opportunity you have to be truly relaxed and truly happy.

Home-based businesses have provided income for families long before the internet. However, the internet has made opening and operating a home-based business easier than ever. These new businesses can provide you the opportunity to earn a substantial income in the comfort of your own home.

However, the picture isn’t always so positive. A home-based business requires work just like any other business. It has to be treated like a business and NOT a hobby. It’s important to make the best use of your time to enable your business to bring you the profits and success you deserve.

Being at home gives the feeling of comfort, relaxation, and escape from work, so it’s very easy to lose focus and  get much different results than the ones you want from your business venture.

Making the Most of a Home-Based Business

So what’s the answer?

Developing a timetable to help manage your life at home will help ensure everything gets done when it needs to be.

Follow these 3 tips to enable your time management plan to work effectively for you:

    1. Use work time wisely. Allocate a specific time slot each day for work and use the time just for that. Avoid being distracted by TV or anything else. Remind yourself that you’ve scheduled enough time for everything, so work time should be just that!
    2. Schedule enough rest time. Lack of rest can significantly impact the results from your home-based business. You’ll start to feel tired and cranky if you’re not well-rested, which will undoubtedly affect the quality and quantity of work you produce.
  • Avoid the temptation to cut into your rest time to get more done; use rest time for actually resting so your work doesn’t suffer.
  • 3. Include scheduled breaks. Once your timetable includes scheduled breaks during work slots, you’ll have something to look  forward to. You’ll also have less of an urge to take “unscheduled” breaks while working.

Poor Time Management Can Lead to Unnecessary Challenges

Of course, how you manage your time at home will significantly impact the success of your at-home business. But what poor time management can also affect is “the rest of your life.” That’s right, working at home in a careless manner can really take its toll on other things. You want to strive for a work/life balance.

  • Family time and other important activities could be negatively impacted if you do not work in a desirable way and don’t reserve enough time for such things.
  • Fitness, health, and diet also need your direct attention when you’re a home based entrepreneur. Not paying enough attention to those things could result in your health being in jeopardy. And that’s the last thing you want when your only source of income is your home-based business!

It’s very easy to get so absorbed in your home-based business and overlook the importance of other aspects of your life. Once you lose focus, your relationships will start to suffer and you may start neglecting your health. If you’re working 16 hours per day, then you’re most likely not exercising or eating properly. Additionally, you will not be spending time with your loved ones. Try to avoid this situation!

Here is the key: Structure and organize everything that you possibly can. Think ahead, expect the unexpected events, prepare thoroughly, and focus on specific results. If you do this, then you can be completely relaxed and ready to take action when the situation changes.

Once you create a structured approach to your business and life in general, you’ll find that you’ll accomplish more, get more financial fulfillment from your business, and be able to achieve balance in other aspects of your life as well!

So, try to take a step back on a regular basis and evaluate yourself, your life and your time usage. You need to become a master of your time rather than a victim to the continuous pressure of time.

Time Management Tips To Help Your Kids Achieve Academic and Personal Success

time for kids

Perhaps the very best question that you can memorize and repeat, over and over, is, “what is the most valuable use of my time right now?” ~ Brian Tracy

How To Contol Your Time

Tell me, do you know a student that waits until the 11th hour…midnight the night before an essay or project is due and then they race the clock to complete their task ? Maybe one lives in your home…maybe you have a similar pattern of behavior.

There are many scenarios like this with students and many other people. Unfortunately, this practice often leads to results that are below average.

This type of scenario and many others like it happen for one reason. The reason is poor time management skills.

Lists can provide you with a realistic look at your workload. Often, people will put more on their plate then they can handle. We often need to see things all together on one comprehensive list to understand the magnitude of all that we are looking to accomplish

What can I do today to be better prepared ?

Whether you are a student in Middle School, High School or College, you need good Time Management skills to succeed.
If you have solid skills and you start at a young age, you will be well served as you become older and enter the work force.
Start by making daily, weekly and monthly goals – use a calendar or write in your agenda.

Make 2 lists:

Homework priorities

Personal priorities, such as sports, activities, family obligations, etc.
Prioritize each list into 3 categories to determine the importance of each task..label each category A,B,C…

A = critical - due tomorrow, prepare long term assignments/tests, mandatory after school rehearsal, etc.

B = important - extra credit assignment, club activity, etc.

C = nice to do – rewrite class notes, play video games, watch T.V.

Don’t put everything into the A list…if you do, you’ll be running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to accomplish all the tasks that must be done.

Task A should be related to a goal or has consequences if it is not completed today.

Sometimes B or C tasks become A tasks when you haven’t planned properly. Such as..procrastinating and then having to complete an entire project the night before it is due.

Sometimes events are out of your control, but you must adapt your schedule and accept responsibility. If you spend your time resenting the reality of the situation, you will just become emotionally upset and accomplish nothing.

Unplanned events and urgent activities, such as going to the hospital or Doctor with a parent happen. These urgent events are unrelated to your goal or consequence.

When you finally return to your priority, your creative momentum might be gone. You might even be distracted and have difficulty concentrating.

The recovery from the interruption might reduce the quality of your work.

Please watch this brief and see what can happen when our kids suffer from poor time management skills. Time management isn’t just for the parents, but extremely important for the success of our children, too.

So, don’t wait until the last minute to do your work !!

Anticipate that things can and do go wrong. Give yourself enough time to do a task right the first time. Have all the tools you need at your fingertips. Work without distractions.

Use a timer to give yourself 15 minutes, 30 minutes or a reasonable amount of time to complete a task. Use part of your time and give yourself short breaks to stretch, eat a snack, play with the dog, etc.

Set goals, plan ahead, do the best job you can do, get help when you need it and accomplish your priorities.

But, above all else, be proud of your efforts !!

Managing Your Time – Article by Brian Tracy

time2

“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” ~ Carl Sandburg

Perhaps the greatest single problem that people have today is “time poverty.” Working people have too much to do and too little time for their personal lives. Most people feel overwhelmed with responsibilities and activities, and the harder they work, the further behind they feel. This sense of being on a never-ending treadmill can cause you to fall into the reactive/responsive mode of living. Instead of clearly deciding what you want to do, you continually react to what is happening around you. Pretty soon you lose all sense of control. You feel that your life is running you, rather than you running your life.

On a regular basis, you have to stand back and take stock of yourself and what you’re doing. You have to stop the clock and do some serious thinking about who you are and where you are going. You have to evaluate your activities in the light of what is really important to you. You must master your time rather than becoming a slave to the constant flow of events and demands on your time.

And you must organize your life to achieve balance, harmony, and inner peace. Taking action without thinking is the cause of every failure. Your ability to think is the most valuable trait that you possess. If you improve the quality of your thinking, you improve the quality of your life, sometimes immediately.

Time is your most precious resource. It is the most valuable thing you have. It is perishable, it is irreplaceable, and it cannot be saved. It can only be reallocated from activities of lower value to activities of higher value. All work requires time. And time is absolutely essential for the important relationships in your life. The very act of taking a moment to think about your time before you spend it will begin to improve your personal time management immediately.

Time management is now a skill you can learn quickly and easily. In this unique video, Internationally renowned consultant Brian Tracy turns his organizational and business skills to the crucial issue of personal time management. You’ll learn how to create a blueprint for each day that will benefit not only your work, but also your time with your family and friends

I used to think that time management was only a business tool, like a calculator or a cellular telephone. It was something that you used so that you could get more done in a shorter period of time and eventually be paid more money. Then I learned that time management is not a peripheral activity or skill. It is the core skill upon which everything else in life depends.

In your work or business life, there are so many demands on your time from other people that very little of your time is yours to use as you choose. However, at home and in your personal life you can exert a tremendous amount of control over how you use your time. And it is in this area that I want to focus.

Personal time management begins with you. It begins with your thinking through what is really important to you in life. And it only makes sense if you organize it around specific things that you want to accomplish. You need to set goals in three major areas of your life. First, you need family and personal goals. These are the reasons why you get up in the morning, why you work hard and upgrade your skills, why you worry about money and sometimes feel frustrated by the demands on your time.

What are your personal and family goals, both tangible and intangible? A tangible family goal could be a bigger house, a better car, a larger television set, a vacation, or anything else that costs money. An intangible goal would be to build a higher quality relationship with your spouse and children, to spend more time with your family going for walks or reading books. Achieving these family and personal goals are the real essence of time management, and its major purpose.

The second area of goals are your business and career goals. These are the “how” goals, the means by which you achieve your personal, “why” goals. How can you achieve the level of income that will enable you to fulfill your family goals? How can you develop the skills and abilities to stay ahead of the curve in your career? Business and career goals are absolutely essential, especially when balanced with family and personal goals.

The third type of goals are your personal development goals. Remember, you can’t achieve much more on the outside than what you have achieved on the inside. Your outer life will be a reflection of your inner life. If you wish to achieve worthwhile things in your personal and your career life, you must become a worthwhile person in your own self-development. You must build yourself if you want to build your life. Perhaps the greatest secret of success is that you can become anything you really want to become to achieve any goal that you really want to achieve. But in order to do it, you must go to work on yourself and never stop.

Once you have a list of your personal and family goals, your business and career goals, and your self-development goals, you can then organize the list by priority. This brings us to the difference between priorities and posteriorities. In order to get your personal time under control, you must decide very clearly upon your priorities. You must decide on the most important things that you could possible be doing to give yourself the same amount of happiness, satisfaction, and joy in life. But at the same time, you must establish posteriorities as well. Just as priorities are things that you do more of and sooner, posteriorities are things that you do less of and later.

The fact is, your calendar is full. You have no spare time. Your time is extremely valuable. Therefore, for you to do anything new, you will have to stop doing something old. In order to get into something, you will have to get out of something else. In order to pick something up, you will have to put something down. Before you make any new commitment of your time, you must firmly decide what activities you are going to discontinue in your personal life. If you want to spend more time with your family, for example, you must decide what activities you currently engage in that are preventing you from doing so.

A principle of time management says that hard time pushes out soft time. This means that hard time, such as working, will push out soft time, such as the time you spend with your family. If you don’t get your work done at the office because you don’t use your time well, you almost invariably have to rob that time from your family.

As a result, because your family is important to you, you find yourself in a values conflict. You feel stressed and irritable. You feel a tremendous amount of pressure. You know in your heart that you should be spending more time with the important people in your life, but because you didn’t get your work done, you have to fulfill those responsibilities before you can spend time with your spouse and children.

Think of it this way. Every minute you waste during the waking day is time that your family will ultimately be deprived of. So concentrate on working when you are at work so that you can concentrate on your family when you are at home.

There are three key questions that you can ask yourself continually to keep your personal life in balance. The first question is, “What is really important to me?” Whenever you find yourself with too much to do and too little time, stop and ask yourself, “What is it that is really important for me to do in this situation?” Then, make sure that what you are doing is the answer to that question.

The second question is, “What are my highest value activities?” In your personal life, this means, “What are the things that I do that give me the greatest pleasure and satisfaction? Of all the things that I could be doing at any one time, what are the things that I could do to add the greatest value to my life?”

And the final question for you to ask over and over again is, “What is the most valuable use of my time right now?” Since you can only do one thing at a time, you must constantly organize you life so that you are doing one thing, the most important thing, at every moment. Personal time management enables you to choose what to do first, what to do second, and what not to do at all. It enables you to organize every aspect of your life so that you can get the greatest joy, happiness, and satisfaction out of everything you do.

Time Management: Accomplish More in Less Time

time

“Once you have mastered time, you will understand how true it is that most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year – and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade!” ~ Anthony Robbins

Time management get more done with less effort.

You can also reduce the stress that goes along with having to finish multiple tasks at the same time.

My Top 4 Tips and Techniques..

1. Keep notes -

Some of the best at time management have a notebook available at all times. This way they can keep track of their day and the tasks they need to accomplish. A simple notebook can be a valuable tool to keep your day organized.

In our high tech world, you can also find many electronic organizers. These organizers help you schedule appointments and tasks and will help you to keep your appointments.

These are also good productivity tools. If you have an idea or a
thought, it is very easy to record into your organizer. This is great
if you have an idea that might actually make your work easier to
accomplish and make you more efficient.

* Note – many people think that they can commit to memory all the tasks, jobs and ideas they need to accomplish. Make sure everything is written down or entered into some sort of organizer. It is very easy to forget and not manage your time properly…so WRITE it down.

2. Divide & Conquer -

The best way to deal with one major problem or multiple problems is to cut up the problem into more manageable parts. If you feel that a problem is too big to handle, then it probably is. To better handle the pressure, deal with the individual parts accordingly.

One of the main reasons people are unable to handle large projects is their inability to divide the problem into modules that can be easily accomplished. After making the problem more manageable, you can then resolve the problem in a more efficient manner until the project is complete.

3. Delegate -

Another way to manage your time wisely would be to delegate some jobs to other people. Just make sure that everyone can work in a cooperative fashion and be on the same wavelength. This will take a lot of communication, skill, and effort. However, it is the only way to accomplish a project that may be too large for one person.

4. Prioritize -

To excel at Time management, you must be able to prioritize.

You must also understand your limitations, such as time, effort and finances.

To your success,

To your Continued success,

Marc
