How Do You Develop The Habit Of Self-Discipline?

Your ability to develop the habit of self-discipline will contribute more to your success than any other quality of character.

Self-discipline is the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state.

Self discipline requires getting out of your comfort zone and expanding your thoughts and your horizons. In order to produce different results, we must grow. In order to grow, you must first have the desire to learn.

If you don’t expand your mind, you cannot achieve new levels of achievement and success in your life.

Do not continue on the same path that got you the results you already have, do something different.

Self-discipline involves acting according to what you think instead of how you feel in the moment.
It involves sacrificing the pleasure and excitement of the moment for what matters most in life and delaying your gratification.

Make no mistake,  self-discipline is often extremely difficult.

If you struggle with self-discipline, you will be happy to know that it can be developed.

Commitment to Self-Discipline

It is not enough to simply write out your goals and values. You must make an internal commitment to them

Discipline yourself…

stop doing the things you have always done and make the decision NOW to eat right, get healthy, study what successful people do and learn from those who have already achieved what you desire.

You will be amazed at what you can accomplish and the things that you can give up to get there, like watching TV and listening to all the negativity.

Why is it that some people are extremely successful, while other more talented and gifted people remain average and mediocre?

Imagine what you could accomplish if you could discipline yourself to follow through on your best intentions no matter what.
Do you want Better health, weight loss, more money ?

Without self-discipline that intention won’t manifest itself, but with sufficient self-discipline, it WILL.
When you master the art of self-discipline, you will reach the point that when you make a conscious decision, it’s virtually guaranteed you’ll follow through on it.

Self-discipline is one of many personal development tools available to you. Self-discipline is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger you become. The less you train it, the weaker you become.

Monitor Yourself Internally

Self-talk can also be extremely beneficial if you have control of it. When you find yourself being tested, I suggest you talk to yourself, encourage yourself and motivate yourself. After all, positive self-talk and affirmations have the ability to remind you of your goals, call up courage, reinforce your commitment and keep you conscious of the task at hand.

1. Goal Setting
Every morning, take three to five minutes to write out your top goals in the present tense.

This daily goal writing will activate your mental powers. It will stimulate your mind and make you more alert. Throughout the day, you will see opportunities and possibilities to move more rapidly toward your goals.

2. Planning and Organizing
Take a few minutes, preferably the night before, to plan out every activity of the coming day. Always work from a list. Always think on paper. This is one of the most powerful and important disciplines of all for high performance.

3. Priority Setting
The essence of all time management, personal management, and life management is contained in your ability to set the proper priorities on the use of your time. This is essential for high performance.

4. Concentration on your Highest-Value Activities
Your ability to work single-mindedly on your most important task will contribute as much to your success as any other discipline you can develop.

5. Time for Important People in your Life

Relationships are everything. Be sure that in climbing the ladder of success, you do not find it leaning against the wrong building. Build time for your relationships into every day, no matter how busy you get.

Begin today to practice self-discipline in every area of your life. Persist in this practice until self-discipline comes to you as automatically and as easily as breathing in and breathing out. Your future will be guaranteed.

  6. Ahhh Discipline. As our own business owners, we must have that. We do wear many hats in this business and devote a lot of time and energy to it. But we do have to make time for our family and friends.
    Your planning and organizing and Priority settings really pop out to me. It is a great way to take control of the day. If we fall of the track, we can always get back into action.
    Life does happen sometimes, and we have to STOP our daily activities and goals and give that priority. But never feel guilty about that. Just jump back on the horse!

  7. I actually coach a couple new people who are starting their own business and was presenting this very topic to them today. Here is what I have found. One, if you don’t write out your short and long term goals you don’t have a plan for your business or project. Its like taking a high speed train to failure. However, if you write out the plan its validates it in a certain way and your more likely to reach those goals. But the true test is your ability to actually follow through with your daily action plan to achieve those goals, and that is where the discipline comes in. Marketing online is easy, doing it consistently without life getting in the way is the hard part.

      I totally agree…you can have the best business plan in the world, but CONSISTENT and PERSISTENT action is the key. Without that, it is a plan to fail.

      By writing it down you intensify your desire for the goal and you increase your belief that the goal is possible

  8. Self discipline is something that I really had to work on and I still learning. The video of Brian Tracey sure is helpful in somebody starting out on their journey to be more discipline. I have always loved my favorite motivational speakers, Zig Ziglars saying, the harder you are on yourself the easier your life will become. I have personal proof that this happens.     What you said about self-talk is so true. In my experience it isn’t enough just to say it when I am struggling, but to say it all the time, every day… because the negative creeps in so often, and I want to ward it off before it has a chance to take hold.

    What a great post that came at a great time. You are so right in that self-discipline is the start of everything. If you can’t self-discipline ourselves then nothing will happen for us. We are fully responsible so without our actions pushed by our self-discipline, we will not succeed.

    A persuasive study that followed 1,000 children from birth to age 32 revealed that children who showed early signs of self-mastery were not only less likely to have developed addictions or committed a crime by adulthood, but were also healthier and wealthier than their more impulsive peers. Self-control is definitely not a trait, it’s a skill that ones can constantly get better at. Marc the 5 disciplines discussed by Brian Tracy gives one the blueprint for success.

    I really appreciate that you bring to us excerpts, information, and videos from Brian Tracy. This article on self-discipline is very thorough and has many practical applications. Your topic is self-discipline and I remember coming across a video of Napoleon Hill having a discussion about it as himself, and I was hooked. He made so much sense as he presented self-discipline and I remember him quoting “If you can’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do.” That was the beginning of my pursuit and research of Napoleon Hill. This quote is foundational as to success can be achieved or not. It is an extremely important characteristic that most people can relate to as being human.

    Oh man this is a great posting!

    I just got done reading a new book (Start With Why – Simon Sinek), and in there the author talks about why starting with why should be the foundation to everything you do.

    While reading the book it suddenly dawned on me that without the real reason why you are doing the things you are doing, the discipline won’t matter. Because sooner or later, the discipline will fade when the results you are after fail to show themselves.

    The interesting thing about it all is, we in the industry we participate in… have had it all wrong for the longest time. When people are asked why they doing something… they most often come back with a response that has something to do with “time with little Johnny” or “The lifestyle i’ve always wanted” or something small visioned at best.

    It’s such a cop-out now that I understand the entire concept all that much better.

    The question is “Why did you get out of bed this morning and why should anyone care?” When starting with WHY, your motivation and discipline fall in line.

    Then, the steps you ironed out here will pay off even greater with larger dividends!

  14. Great article Marc, and I always enjoy hearing from Bryan. I think for anyone who’s new to cultivating self-discipline, or may have experieced problems in that area in the past, it might be helpful to take a building block approach – build momentum (and confidence) with small victories, gradually expanding your comfort zones by trying new and more challenging activities and experiences. It’s amazing what a few “wins” will do for your self-esteem and willingness to take on greater challenges.
