Decision Making or Procrastination ? 8 Ways To Become More Decisive

“Using the power of decision gives you the capacity to get past any excuse to change any and every part of your life in an instant.” ~Anthony Robbins

Develop Decision Making Power ..

It would be wise and responsible of you to make informed decisions about things that will affect your life. It’s rather unwise and irresponsible to avoid making conscious decisions about how you choose to spend your time.

Here are some benefits of becoming more decisive and practical steps for making better decisions faster in every aspect of your life.

The Benefits of Becoming More Decisive:

  • Pursue your dreams. One of the major benefits of making conscious choices is that you can shape a life path that reflects your values and priorities. Without taking action, you may find yourself drifting through whatever circumstances come along.
  • Save time and energy. Making decisions more quickly frees the time that gets wasted going back and forth over the same options. It also eliminates the stress, confusion and anxiety that you may feel about making mistakes.
  • Feel more confident. Taking greater control over your life and developing your decision-making skills builds your self-confidence. This creates a positive momentum because it’s easier to make decisions when you believe in yourself and your abilities.
  • Learn more. Every decision is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the world around you. The choices you make reveal your character. The fear of failure can be transformed into a willingness to learn from adversity and gain valuable feedback about areas where you can improve.

Our decisions shape our lives. Whether we rise to great success or head down to failure, it comes from the decisions we make (and the actions we take).

We all make some decisions all day long, consciously and unconsciously.. about important and not so important things. The fact is the decisions we make always give us some results and consequences.

How to Become More Decisive:

  1. Motivate yourself. Once you make the conscious effort to become more decisive, you’ll recognize opportunities to be more pro-active throughout your daily life. It can be scary to commit to a course of action, so remind yourself of the advantages of leading a more intentional life.
  2. Do your research. Making reliable decisions requires the correct information. Get your facts and figures straight by doing some research on your own or consulting those with the relevant expertise.
  3. Analyze the pros and cons. For complex decisions, it’s often helpful to draw a grid. Plot the pros and cons and assign them a value based on their importance to you. Real life dilemmas may be more complicated than simple math, but this exercise gives you a good outline for what direction to take.
  4. Start small. Get a gradual start with making quick decisions in areas where you feel confident and where the consequences are relatively minor.
  5. Practice. Work your way up to more significant decisions as you build confidence in your abilities. Learn to trust your judgment and accept any consequences or criticisms that may arise.
  6. Give yourself a timeline. You may have to set your own timeline to prompt yourself to action. For example..If you want to buy a house in a few years, start now to make financial decisions that will give you the savings and credit rating you’ll need to achieve your goal.
  7. Face your fears. The fear of making mistakes can be a barrier to becoming more decisive. Be gentle with yourself but move ahead even if you’re nervous. Mistakes are a part of life and, in the long run, you may learn more from failures than from victories. Fear of Failure Prompts Procrastination
  8. Follow your heartThe decisions you make in your personal life are successful if they bring you more happiness and contentment. You may find more gratification in being a professional dog walker than in going to business school. Rational analysis is helpful, but you want to feel good about whatever choices you make.

Becoming more decisive will help you get more out of life. Take a pro-active approach to making life choices that you can be proud of.

Important Note: Some of us avoid making decisions when it comes to just about everything.

Have you ever been to a restaurant with someone who takes forty five minutes to order dinner? Instead making a decision and living with it, some people will not make a decision at all. Depending on the situation, this can have huge negatives implications.

It has been suggested that fear of failure may be connected to procrastination. The explanation is, we become very anxious about tasks we think we will not do very well.

For people who suffer from severe procrastination, the panic is enough to stop them from doing something all together. So, make sure you develop your decision making skills and End Procrastination Now.

  1. Marc,

You are dead on with this post! Being decisive is key to following your dreams! Without being decisive people let all the anxious energy get in the way of their success. Whenever I have been at a crossroads I need to stop, because I am not sure what would be the best option for me. When I have committed I go after my dreams full force.

Also, I thought it was interesting how you mentioned practice. Most people do not think that decisiveness needs to be practiced, but the reality is that it is very rare to find someone who immediately changes from indecisive to decisive without a gradual change. As humans, it is hard to break the habits we already have.

    • Hey Andy,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

Decision making is like any other skill and it needs to be practiced to be perfected. The more you practice and make decisions, the more confident you will become.

Once we make a decision and have a plan and a goal and “take action” , we are on our way to achieving our dreams..

I agree, it doesn’t happen overnight, it is a gradual change for many people, but as long as we grow in a positive direction and create new and better habits… we will be able to celebrate many triumphs.

      To your success,
      Marc

  2. Anthony Robbins is great 🙂 I think it is imperative to be decisive in our lives and be positively positive on what we need and want. Great post Marc. I will see you again next week.

    • Hey Ross,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

Absolutely agree and if we combine a decisive nature with “Take Action” attitude, that will be a tandem that will accelerate Success.

There simply are just too many choices that we are faced with every day and it is an essential skill to be able to become decisive and it is very empowering.

      To your continued success,
      Marc

  3. I was going to wait until tomorrow to make this comment but then I thought I had better practice what you preach Marc.
I think that the reason people delay is often the fear which you mentioned. But I learnt a long time ago that fear is simply false evidence appearing real. I could not succeed unless I made some mistakes along the way.

    • Hi Trevor,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

I’m happy that you didn’t put off till tomorrow what you could do today !

Mistakes are all part of the game of life and some of the best life lessons are learned from the mistakes we make and we all do make mistakes.

      To your continued success,
      Marc

  4. Thanks for this Marc! I love the idea of living intentionally, something we need to do more of in our world today. Nothing can destroy a business (or any relationship for that matter) than indecision. Great post!

    • Hi Ylva,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. Decision making like so many other skills is one that needs to be practiced, so that people become more comfortable and confident in their decision making ability.

      To your success,

  5. Hi Marc. What a great post. I’m a procrastinator in so many ways, and I can always use a little kick in the seat of my pants. I was told one time that have several unfinished projects that I ‘worked a little here, worked a little there’ but never seem to finish is a form of procrastination. I finally finished that first project and am well on the way to getting the second one done, and it FEELS SO GOOD! My husband always tells me he is going to join the Proscrastinators’ Club – he just hasn’t gotten around to it.

Wishing you a song in your heart,

    • Hi Leslie,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

Most of us tend to procrastinate from time to time and we may not even be aware of it. Sometimes you just have too many large projects and you need to get other things done as well, so it is good to break a project up into smaller tasks.

Overwhelm can cause procrastination. When you don’t know where to start, its easy to put off starting at all. Reduce overwhelm by breaking projects down into 15-minute tasks. The important thing is to take action and reward yourself when you finish a task or project.

      To your Musical Mastery,
      Marc

  6. Hi Marc:

Awesome stuff here! I struggled with making decisions for a long time. It was mostly do to fear of failure or rejection. I am learning to put those fears aside so that I can be a much more decisive person.

    Thanks for the inspiring post!
    Kevin

    • Hi Kevin,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

I’m so happy you enjoyed the post… learning to make decisions is often a struggle for many of us. But, like any skill, it can be mastered by repetition.

It is OK to start with small, minor decisions and over time, we will gain the confidence to take action and become more decisive. Just remember, that it is OK to make mistakes. Some of the best life lessons are learned from first making mistakes.

      To your continued success,
      Marc

  7. Hi Marc,
Love it! Love it! Love it! I followed Anthony Robbins “unlimited Power” back in 1988 – OK just gave away my age – LOL! anyway, I have lived my life in a very definite focused way even though the outcome has been very unconventional. I have moved across four continents to finally land in America two years ago. I dreamed of living here when I was three! I never gave up even though a pathway didn’t open up until recently. Now I move forward in a new career to help and assist people with their social media management online! this makes absolute sense and the decision to do this was made in an instant but the road leading up to that decision took decades. The most life-changing decisions can be made in a split second but every action, every event and every interaction we have in life is a preparation for the key decisions we are designed to make.
thank you for sharing and I look forward to connecting more, Marc!
    Blessings
    Clare

  8. Hey Marc,

During 3/4th of the post I was thinking about the restaurant example, which I heard years ago from a german motivator and how to train your decision-making muscle and at the end of the post you mentioned it… Well done!

Yeah, as the german speaking motivater mentioned in his statement…”Always when I am at a resturaunt I only use 30seconds to make a choice and sometimes it happens that I HAVE to eat something that I don’t like at all”. What a statement! Espacially the HAVE in the sentence needs the most attention, because here it shows how people differ… Can you carry the concequences or do you push the plate away and say I stay hungry??? This little exercise alone can be a worthy task to follow every time entering a restaurant and start building up your confidence.

Thx again for sharing such a great post and the top of this lesson was/is the video of Tony Robbins.

    All the best,

    Alex

  9. Marc,

Great post… and love the video. There is so much truth in this post, and great insights on how to make decisions, stick to them and not get caught up in fear and procrastination.

We can gain so much by following the tips you’ve outlined here on making decisions, and of course adding the wisdom of Tony Robbins is a great learning as well.

    Thanks so much,

  10. Not surprising, then, that Napoleon Hill says Decision is the mastery of procrastination.

The biggest benefit I find among those you’ve listed is that making decisions and acting on them frees up time and energy that would otherwise be spent on vacillating and avoiding the inevitable. Okay, so that’s a loose paraphrase… but it’s my expression of an important lesson I am learning.

    Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

  11. Hi Marc,

Thank you for presenting this post for three reasons. 1) It stimulated really great discussions 2) I love Anthony Robbins. He is always an inspiration! 3) The timing was perfect. Any information or insight into procrastination is always presented at the perfect time because so many people can relate to it. Someone is procrastinating somewhere and this post is helpful to many people.

The premise of your post is based on this quote by Anthony Robbins, “Using the power of decision gives you the capacity to get past any excuse to change any and every part of your life in an instant.” What a powerful quote! This quote by itself is great food for thought.

You offered many practical guidelines to avoid procrastination and all of them are valuable. I particularly like the idea of drawing a grid and plotting the pros and cons and assigning a value based on their importance. I remember doing that action many years ago when I was trying to decide whether or not to sign up as a consultant for a company. It really helped clarify which direction I needed to pursue and I was able to make the decision to take action and sign up. I probably would have done nothing and not taken the job which would have been a mistake. I am grateful I was able to move forward.

Thanks again for this excellent article, including Mr. Robbins video on making decisions and understanding procrastination. Marc, you are a leader and I appreciate your the support you have shown to me and your fellow network marketers!

  12. Marc,

Really enjoyed the video clip, taking action and making a decision is so important in our live. Taking the time and research, set a time frame than making the decisions today will shape our future.

  13. Hello Marc:

Thanks for the great tips on decision Making. At one time many years ago I always struggled with making decisions & at times I would even do Nothing. I found out hesitation or ‘Doing Nothing’ also was a decision as well….& one that Pretty much ‘Bit me in the butt’ every time.

There is a Power that we can grasp if we will access the situation & then make the best decision Possible. It is the Power as you talk about to shape & control our own destiny. There should be no fear in that, as even if the decision seems to not work out, we just go on & learn a valuable lesson that we can apply the next time.

    Matt

  14. Hi Marc,

Thank you for this excellent post ! I agree with all the benefits of becoming decisive.

There are a lot of differences between my hubby and my good-self 🙂 He has got better purchasing power and I always delay in making such decision because I believe I can get better bargain for not buying things immediately 🙂 Sometimes, I am right but sometimes he is better because he is not wasting time and get things done immediately 🙂

I love your post, Marc. Thanks again.

    Cheers
    Pearly

  15. Tony Robbins has so much wisdom to share and IF we would just listen to him and people like yourself who share that wisdom, our lives would be, as Tony says, inspiring.

Thanks for this post. We all need that little kick to remind ourselves: make a decision, do it now, even if it is just with the small things.

    Thanks Marc,
    Joyce

  16. Marc

This is so true. If you have maybe 4 or 5 of these qualities you could make a huge difference in your life and the live of others.

I guess the biggest challenge sometimes is deciding what path to take. But it’s all part of the process but once that is accomplished along with this list you have here you are virtually unstoppable.

  17. Marc,

Great empowering information, and fantastic video. Get you up and moving in the right directions.

I agree, with setting a standard and keeping it above anything else. Staying focused and being persistent will take you a long way.

This was a great refresher course for all.

Thank you Marc, for locating such needed information. I look forward to your next fantastic fined….

  18. Thank so much, Marc,

I think I will listen to that audio track every morning for a few days. So powerful! And your blog enhances Tony Robbins’ talk with practical ways to implement it and remember what he said. Great job putting this together. You are a gift to the business community.

  19. Marc, great message and one that everyone needs to hear. Procrastination will steal one’s success if allowed to rule. Learning to be decisive is crucial if one is to be successful. NO decision is the only bad decision. One can always attack and adjust. Thanks for the wonderful information.

  20. Marc, I have just finished reading this post . Many thanks for the good advice and tips. You are so right if you are not decisive and have direction it is very difficult to succeed. Enjoy the weekend.

  21. Hi Marc,

Decision is the starting point of owning your life. I find is interesting and enlightening the kinds of answers (or lack of answers) I get when I ask people I mentor one question, “How can I help you own you life?”. It seems that many of us come from lack and often find that this state of lack keeps us stuck, whether we are aware of this programming or not. But those who make a decision to own their lives find that, layer by layer, Life’s abundance opens as we peal back each layer of our own personal development onion.

  22. Hey Marc

You are spot on with all the tips and advice, it is pretty obvious at least for me that Tony Robbins is by far the most well known and recognized speaker when it comes to self development on so many levels so when he speaks people should listen whether they think they need to or not.

The benefits you mentioned in the beginning are why most people have a desire for their own freedom from their current life and why they should strive to seek what can be attained outside of their comfort level. I can relate to those 8 tips, they don’t happen all the time but should and should make a habit of doing so, its just not something I am accustomed to but should get used to all of those things for quite a few reasons partially because they all have so many benefits especially when combined.

  23. Holy cow there’s so much great material in this post…it could be a short ebook. Love it! Your advice is spot on and if everyone follows these steps, they’re sure to enjoy much greater success.

Plus, I’m a total sucker for anything Tony 😀 If not for him, I may not be here leaving this comment to you!

    Thanks so much!

  24. Love this post Marc.

People procrastinate and they do make a decision.
    Just do it!
Tony tells it like it is. Like me 🙂

People are complacent and just remain status quo.
That is why nothing changes and they remain in a rut.
    Thanks for sharing.
You are an absolute leader and friend.

    Maggie

  25. I’m so glad I found this article Marc – this has always been a challenge for me because I tend to over analyze things. To try and balance putting the right amount of research and consideration into a decision without delaying things beyond reason, I give myself deadlines. It’s not perfect, but you are so right about starting small. I find the process much easier these days … I am a HUGE fan of Tony Robbins – love this video!
