Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Daily Goal-Setting

“Your ability to set goals is the master skill of success. Goals unlock your positive mind and release ideas and energy for goal attainment. Without goals, you simply drift and flow on the currents of life. With goals, you fly like an arrow, straight and true to your target.” ~ Brian Tracy

In Brian Tracy’s Report The Miracle of Self-Discipline, we hear about the importance of focus and concentration in your overall success.

According to the report, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. It turns out that every exercise of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline at the same time, just as every weakness in self-discipline weakens you in other disciplines as well.

Today, we are going to focus on the Discipline Of Daily Goal Setting with a little help from Brian Tracy’s 7-Step Goal Setting Model….

** In this blog, you will find many posts with content from Brian Tracy who has been one of my Mentors for quite some time. The goal of the Personal Development part of this blog is to provide you with the BEST possible content. That is achieved by presenting you with Brian Tracy content in many instances…I hope you enjoy the read and the video…

Focus and Concentration

Perhaps the two most important qualities of success are focus and concentration. Focus means knowing exactly what it is you want and concentration means having the discipline to concentrate single-mindedly on one thing, the most important thing, until it is complete.

If you have these qualities, and both of these qualities are learned through practice, you can accomplish virtually anything. There are no limits on your future if you can focus and concentrate every hour of every single day.

Goal setting has 7 Steps.…Watch this video where Brian will give you a step by step guide to achieving your goals.

7-Step Goal Setting Model

Here is the basic seven-step model of goal setting. You can use this like breathing in and breathing out on a regular basis to accelerate your attainment of any goal you can imagine for yourself.

Step One:

Decide exactly what you want.

This immediately moves you into a separate category of people because most people have no idea of what they really want.

Clarity is the most important single quality of goal-setting and perhaps the most important single quality of success. Decide exactly what you want in each area of your life. Instead of fuzzy goals like more money, better health and happiness, be specific about exactly how much more money you want to earn in a specific period of time and combine that with exactly what level of health and fitness you desire.

Most people are unconsciously preoccupied with the fear of failure. It is the greatest single obstacle to success in adult life. And the fear of failure can work on you unconsciously by blocking you from setting clear specific goals.

Why? Well, if you don’t set clear, specific goals, then you can’t fail to achieve them. So your subconscious mind is actually protecting you by helping you to avoid failure.

You must resist and overcome this tendency by having the courage to be bold and specific about exactly what you want.

Step Two:

Write your goal down on paper.

Only three percent of living Americans, or adults anywhere for that matter, have written goals. Everyone else that thinks about a written goal and plans to write them down, someday. But they never get around to it. Most people spend more time making a list of groceries before they go shopping or planning a vacation than they do in planning their lives. But again, this is not for you. Success begins with a pad of paper, a pen and a few minutes of your time. One of the most important keys to success is to “think on paper.”

All successful people “think on paper.” And here are two important points. If you cannot write it down clearly and specifically on a piece of paper, then it means that you are not really clear about it yourself. Perhaps you don’t even want it. What is worse, it may be that you are afraid that you may not attain it. Nonetheless, a goal that is written down is merely a fantasy or a wish. A goal that is clearly written and described on a piece of paper takes on a power of its own, it is now something concrete that you can touch and feel and work with.

The second principle of writing goals down is that something miraculous happens between the head and the hand. When you actually write a goal down, it is as if you are programming it into your subconscious mind and activating a whole series of mental powers that will enable you to accomplish more than you ever dreamed of. By writing it down you intensify your desire for the goal and you increase your belief that the goal is possible.

You begin to expect to achieve the goal and you start to attract people and circumstances into your life that are consistent with the attainment of the goal. Writing your goal down is one of the most amazing of all goal-setting skills and it is a key to your success.

Step Three:

Set a deadline.

If it is a large goal, set a series of sub-deadlines. A deadline acts as a “forcing system” on your subconscious mind and begins to move you toward your goal rapidly while it moves your goal toward you.

Sometimes people ask me, “What if I set a goal and I don’t achieve it by the deadline?” The answer is simple. Set another deadline.

Remember, a deadline is a guess-timate of when you will achieve it. Sometimes you will achieve your goal well in advance of your deadline. Sometimes goals will take much longer than you expect. But you must have a target time before you set off.

It is like making a reservation at a restaurant. You may be five minutes early or five minutes late, but you always have a specific time for which your dinner is reserved.

Step Four:

Make a list of everything you could possibly think of that you will have to do to achieve your goal.

The more comprehensive your list, the more motivated you will become, the more intense will be your desire and the more you will believe it possible.

One of the things that hold people back is even if they get to the point of a written goal; they do not take the time to lay out a list of all the little things they will have to do to get there. And with additional experience, you will add new items to your list until it finally becomes complete.

Step Five:

Take your list and organize it into a plan.

A plan is really quite simple. It is a list organized by priority and importance. You decide what you will do first and what you will do later. You decide what is more important and what is less important. And most of all, you decide upon the one thing that is more important than anything else that you can do immediately to begin moving more rapidly towards your goal.

Step Six:

For you to “take action!”

This is the big killer for most people. They are procrastinators. They have great ideas combined with great hopes and dreams. They may even get to the point of writing down their goals. But when it comes to taking action, they always have a reason or excuse to procrastinate to put it off until a later time. However, as the Bible says, “Faith without deeds is dead.”

It is when you launch toward your goal that you begin to feel the desire and power that goes along with goal setting. And once you have launched toward your goal, it is much easier for you to continue moving in that direction.

Step Seven:

Do something every day to move you toward your major goal.

Never let a day go by without you engaging in some action that helps you move another step in the direction of what you really, really want in life.

Remember, you can’t hit a target that you can’t see. And if you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.

The simple seven step act of deciding exactly what you want, writing it down, setting a deadline, making a list, organizing the list into a plan, taking action on the most important item on your list and then doing something every day towards your goal will change your life and your future in ways that you cannot even dream of today.

  3. Thank you Marc for putting together this well informed post. 1. Yes, I have accomplished setting goals on exactly what I want. 2. i did all the writing as well as a mind map and a vision board. That helped me refining step 1. Funny thing, sometimes we think we know what we want until we do these exercises to clarify it. So I found that step 2 actually fine-tuned my step 1. When following all the other steps, I’m not perfect at it, but I do work on it every day. To me these guidelines are the key to success in any goal in life. It is like exercise to me, you have to keep doing it in order to build yourself to the goal required. Every day, I practice and even if I fail to do something, I keep in my mind the old saying “Practice Makes Perfect.”
Thanks again Marc I’m always learning something from your blog! Donna

You are goal oriented and never lose the vision that you have set for yourself and you are self motivated to be disciplined and achieve your goals….I applaud you.

You take ACTION every day and that is the key…we all fail to do something from time to time, but you have the winning attitude and it is no surprise that you are successful at what you do.

  4. It just happened to me few days ago. I set a goal regarding follow-up in my business but I was so busy I did not write a plan, no wonder I did not see progress at all. Until I realized I have to write a plan and stick to it, then I saw the magic results. Thanks, refreshing and going to the basics is always good.

  7. Marc,

Great post, as usual. Brian Tracy truly is the Master! He is an expert at teaching goal setting and that short video clip of him is a gem. I especially like steps 6 and 7. Which are essentially Take Action and do something, big or small, to help you on your way to your goal every single day! One of my own Jupiter Jim original quotes is: “Anything is better than nothing.” Which means doing something, however imperfectly, is so much better than doing nothing at all. That seems so obvious, I know, but most people just won’t start creating a blog, or a blog post, or writing a book, or starting on their Network Marketing Company until conditions are perfect and the time is sufficient to do a perfect job. That time almost never arrives. So do like Brian Tracy says 6. Take Action 7. and Take some action every day!

    Take CAre,

    Jupiter Jim

    • @Jupiter Jim,

      Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

Brian Tracy is one of the very best when it comes to teaching and training goal setting strategies and techniques, whether for short term or long term goals.

But, as you stated, even if you have tremendous clarity of what your goal is and you have it written down and the best plan in the world, it is all for nothing if you don’t take ACTION and do something EVERY day to move you closer to your goals.

But, many people always have some sort of excuse and that’s where procrastination can eat you up alive.

      Keep inspiring us,
      Marc

  8. Hi Marc,
Thanks for very interesting article. I completely agree with you. Every day I prepare the plan for my work. It helps me to achieve my goals. At the same time it is not easy for me to stick to this plan. Sometimes I get distracted or I am tired.

I like your idea about the paper and I prefer writing the plan on paper, not using the computer. Maybe it is old fashioned but it works best for me. Thanks.

  9. This is such a great post Marc, and close to my heart! I have found daily discipline and goal setting has helped me out and changed my life. Thanks for sharing this great information. I think if people grasp this they have limitless possibilities!

  10. Hi Mark,

I totally agree that Brian Tracy is “the man” when it comes to personal development and goal setting. I always look forward to what he has to share and your efforts are appreciated. The Seven Steps of Goal Setting is extremely valuable to me at this point in my business career. I have reached a point which demands goal setting, so this presentation clarifies the goal setting process. You listed the 7-Step Goal Setting Model:

    Step One:
    Decide exactly what you want.

    Step Two:
Write your goal down on paper.

    Step Three:
    Set a deadline.

    Step Four:
Make a list of everything you could possibly think of that you will have to do to achieve your goal.

    Step Five:
Take your list and organize it into a plan.

    Step Six:
    For you to “take action!”

    Step Seven:
Do something every day to move you toward your major goal.

I think all 7 are vital to the plan, however I am beginning to realize that clarity is one of the most important steps. Nothing can follow afterwards if you are not perfectly clear on what you want to achieve. , “If you don’t set clear, specific goals, then you can’t fail to achieve them. So your subconscious mind is actually protecting you by helping you to avoid failure.” Wow! That is profound. Most people are so afraid of failure! Since our behavior is 80% subconscious, that’s a tough nut to break! By following Brian Tracy’s steps, it is possible!

Of course step 7 is major….take action!

As usual, you have provided super great high value information with your video from Brian Tracy.
Also, thanks for the gift, “The Ultimate Goals Program Plus Bonuses”

  11. I love that little graphic you put with this post with the stair steps. Only thing is, it’s missing a couple of steps!! This is a great post, Marc. I like it clear and simple! As we learn to include every one of these 7 steps, we will find ourselves getting closer and closer to our goals.

    Willena Flewelling

  12. Goals are not just some laundry list of “sometime in the future” stuff but designed to be not only worked on daily but mapped to timelines so that action becomes the next logical step. When we pay attention to our goals on a daily basis it makes a powerful difference.

    Kim

PS: You write such great replies that you really should install the ReplyMe plugin which sends your reply (any reply to their comment but not all comments) to the commentors inbox. Great plugin. I think it would help improve engagement for you once people realize you’re leaving such good stuff as followup.

  13. Thank you Marc for sahring Brian Tracy’s video and the 7 steps to goals setting and success.
From my experience with myself and with clients’ I realise that taking action in a consistent way is on eof the biggest challenges faced.
Often action is fueled by enthusiasm but after 3 months the goals does not have the energy it used to have when we started.
I think that a key point is drive the person to automotivate himself ( or do this on oursleves when we have our own goals) so that results are seen, measured and celebrated.
    Thanks for this great post!

  14. Hi Marc,
Great post as usual for our self-development. I love that you focus on Brian Tracy and then also give us access to his special reports directly related to your post.

I really think Brian has picked and well-explained the essential steps to setting and achieving your goals and you have highlighted all the key points here in your post.

I especially liked the recommendation under Step 3 Set a Deadline to set sub deadlines for goals that are large and far-reaching. Sub-deadlines will keep things realistic and provide the feeling of great accomplishment as we meet each sub-deadline.

I also saw the importance of Step 4 Writing down everything you can think of that must be done to accomplish your goal. Doing this helps you to fine-tune your goal and to most likely prevent forgetting an important step. If you spend the time with the objective and focus of thinking of all the pieces, you’ll end up with a very complete list that you can then organize into a plan in Step 5.

All the steps flow together and if we take the time to not miss a step, your goal can be achieved.

Thanks for giving us your valuable insight into your great mentor, Brian Tracy so we can all benefit as you are!

    (Dave) and Dawn

  15. Hi Mark

    What a good post.

You and me are on the same plain level about this.

If you don’t know were you want to go you will go no were.

it is interesting to listen to people at work that don’t have Goals or dreams or the mite have dreams but belief that they will never get there. It ha[en today with me as i listen to day to a person talking at work. He want to tour the world but he have no goals or belief that he can do it.

The 7 Steps is very important that is what i did to get my game were it is today and i know soon it will be were i want it to be.

Willie J. sai you must do 3 things every day that will help you to move closer to your dream.

    Regards
    Theuns :-).

  16. Great post Marc, You think every entrepreneur knows how to set goals and have them all written down right? I know for a fact that a lot of people go without any direction for the longest time because they just don’t see the need to set goals.

I love to see videos about the process of setting goals especially the one you have on your blog today. It’s short but has so much in it…I mean it is all basically laid out for us…it’s almost as all we need to do is fill in the blanks.

But those blanks, which are our goals, will become the reason why we wake up in the morning right! Thanks so much for the wonderful guidelines to set for people…It is truly a gift 😉

    Nathalie

  17. Marc, thanks for sharing this information. Like you, I believe that setting goals, being clear about them, writing them down, and taking daily action is the key to achieving whatever you want to do in life. Daily affirmations also help to reinforce and clarify what you want and keep you focused on the positive.

  18. I have to agree with you. These steps are worth follow. Having self discipline and a good plan we will able to achieve our goal. Thanks for sharing this remarkable article.

  19. Marc,
I don’t think one can ever learn enough about self discipline, setting goals, making lists cause it really needs to be a daily practice in our lives if we are to ever accomplish what we want. And those lists and goals are usually being refined, added to or subtracted from as we go about our days.
I appreciate the value you give to us to help us straighten up and fly right!
