“Accountability breeds response-ability.” Stephen R. Covey
Accountability is a concept in ethics with several meanings. It is often used synonymously with such concepts as responsibility, answerability, enforcement, blameworthiness, liability and other terms associated with the expectation of account-giving.
In leadership roles, accountability is the acknowledgment and assumption of responsibility for actions, decisions, and policies and includes the obligation to report, explain and be answerable for resulting consequences.
Remind yourself – if it’s meant to be it’s up to me.
Every choice, every decision you make creates the outcomes you have in your life. Take personal responsibility and be accountable.
Known as The Accountability Master, Marsha Petrie Sue dares people to take personal responsibility for their choices, success, and life. She is original, unique, and a one-of-a-kind professional speaker and author.
Personal responsibility is the most important ethic you can exercise. With the cultivation of personal responsibility comesgrowth in all areas of life. It is a matter of taking charge of your own self and your circumstances through well-directed thoughts, words, and deeds.
Also, be aware that learning never ends, giving you the opportunity to effect change and to improve continually. Personal responsibility is the science of success in living well.
Having gained all the benefits of personal responsibility will give you the position of being sought after by others for help. So teach them about personal responsibility so that they too can grow and come into their own.
Teaching others to be responsible for themselves and their actions or lack of actions is just like teaching someone to fish so that they will always have food, rather than the temporary solution of giving someone food with the result that they will again be hungry shortly. If you allow others to demonstrate for themselves that they can catch fish..they will now be able to feed themselves, which will also feed their self-esteem.
Take the personal responsibility to look at the underlying cause of problems so they can be completely resolved, rather than just quick fixes.
Personal responsibility ensures not only happiness in the present, but also certainty about the future. Personal responsibility is the most important ethic you can continue to develop.
So remember, “if it’s meant to be it’s up to me.” ~ don’t blame others, don’t point fingers at other people for your lack of success..

Great post! It seems that a lot of people these days don’t know what the word “responsibility” means and everything that happens to them is someone else’s fault. It takes me back to when I finally decided to leave my stressful and unfulfilling brick and mortar job to run my own business. Risky as it was, it was the best decision I ever made. I’m still striving to be a better catalyst for the level of success I achieve as an entrepreneur.
Really enjoyed your post Marc – this is a terrific video! It’s ironic that I was just thinking about the whole issue of accountability earlier this morning after reading an article about tribe syndication in general. The author’s position was that it doesn’t work, but reading further into the article he said that for him the biggest issue was he’d been expected to “invest” time reading other peoples blogs and commenting and he admitted he just couldn’t be bothered. I thought WOW, here’s someone who didn’t fulfill his own commitment, didn’t even recognize his accountability in his lack of success with the system, and now he’s advising other people that it doesn’t work.
Great post, Marc! I think that this is a great example of the things that we need to do in order to succeed. I’ve read other books that say that we should invest as much as 10% of our annual after-tax income in our education and personal development, but I know that even when I don’t spend a lot of money, I always have several books out from the local library to educate and inspire. Also, there is some great information on body language. I bought some books a few years ago about speaking and body language, so I think this just might be the summer where I actually read them. Thanks again for posting such great information!
It is so easy to pass the buck to someone else, not realising that the buck stops with us. This post was very good and a great reminder to those of us who sometimes forget.
Fabulous Message in the video and in your article! It is so true, we have to take responsibility for our own personal growth. If we are not growing, then we are done. Nobody else will do it for us. We have to be the captain of our ship. And we are never to old to change direction!
Blessings to You!

“If it is to be It’s up to me”
This small sentence has changed my life. It has made it more difficult (because now I am the only one to blame) and it has made it easier ( Because I am the only one to blame)
I have found that from the day I made myself responsible for my life that things started happening.
I started to notice that more opportunities came my way, that I had better direction in my life, and that I saw more joy in my life.
Thank you for reaffirming this short sentence to me

Personal responsibility is very important and at the same time something that is so hard, because instict tells us that we need to fight or flight. Acceptance is not immediately built into our genes and takes time to develop.
Hi Marc, again another great post! I really enjoyed reading it and I learned a lot from it. Good point here: “Teaching others to be responsible for themselves and their actions or lack of actions is just like teaching someone to fish so that they will always have food, rather than the temporary solution of giving someone food with the result that they will again be hungry shortly. ” I totally agree with you. Thank you for sharing this and for being an inspiration to all of us!
We are kind of living in a blame culture environment these days so it is no wonder that we try to blame others for our own shortcomings. Everyone, including the government, seem to be blaming someone.
We can do better than that though and maybe they can learn from us. Let us have a little campaign to take responsibility for everything that happens in our lives. It could become catching.
Thanks for sharing this article and video about accountability. This is a core important characteristic of every individual and our society. Unfortunately people are becoming less and less accountable and therefore leads to dependency, as an individual, a community, a state, a nation and a planet.
The video presented by “The Accountability Master,” Marsha Petrie Sue is excellent. It is our responsibility to take control of our lives and be our own CEO. I liked when she talked about resonance or dissonance and smiling from the heart.
Self-sufficiency, success, and accountability starts with each one of us. The lack of accountability is almost like a virus nowadays spreading from one family to the next. I do not want to point out the negative, but it is reality. Those of us who are already practicing the lifestyle of accountability with engrained ethics and values have an obligation to teach others that the whole does not survive without it.
You talked about the teaching someone how to fish. Of course I have to quote one of my favorites, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he eats for a life time.” I can’t help it. I’m a teacher!
If I read that saying “if it’s meant to be it’s up to me” 2 years ago, I would’ve thought differenty as I do today. The reason for the difference is because of the expereinces I’ve had along the way, the path I chose, the type of knowledge I’ve added to my life, and how all that has tied in and taught me what I know now. I have shaped and developed a better belief system than if I had not decided to grow and develop who I am inside (by way of reading and exposing myself to successful resources).
A great part of my belief sytem is to help others become more responsible (personally) for the choices they make on a daily basis and help them to see how their actions, or lack thereof, designs the exact road they are headed to.
Great article Marc. Thanks for putting this together for us!
Hey Marc – Thanks so very much for sharing the video. My new job title is CEO of ME. Love it. Never really thought of my personal development being the R&D of ME, yet I’ve come to learn and understand it’s critical to my business growth. Kinda like R&D…..Debi
Hey Marc,
Since we are becoming a country of people who don’t want to take responsiblity for anything in their lives, your post is something that really hit home. I work in the medical field and have an account with a lot people who are on public assistance. Since they have no responsibilty for their own health they don’t show any respect for people who are there to help them.
Hi Marc,
you are teaching something which a lot of people don’t get until they are older.
Love your wisdom!
I particularly like : “Take the personal responsibility to look at the underlying cause of problems so they can be completely resolved, rather than just quick fixes.” For me that has meant doing counselling again and again in different stages of my life. Having had a very unusual childhood there was lots to be resolved.
Thank you for the great article.
Cheers,
Yorinda
This is a good post. My perception about success changed a lot after reading Today Matters by John Maxwell. If we make good decisions daily and then add constant discipline then we will have a better tomorrow.
Excellent ! You have just posted an article which I would say can serve as a wake up call to many including myself. At many times we know that if we want to succeed we must be very clear of the path ahead and if we didn’t achieve something along the way, we need not only to keep going. But, to stop for a while and give an answer to ourselves. We have forgotten that we are responsible for ourselves and that is accountability (just like you mentioned above). So, when we practice this and have faith in ourselves, we have no one else to blame when things go wrong ! We know we owe ourselves and answer, rectify it and keep moving !
It’s SO important to take control of our lives and to accept our own personal responsibility. It’s so much easier to just blame things on someone or something else, but we have the power to control what we do and, most importantly, how we think about the world and the people around us. Taking personal responsibility for your attitude (something it’s taking me a lonnnnng time to do) is SO important. Great one Marc!
Great post Marc accountability especially self accoutability is so crucial. You have to answer to yourself at the end of the day. Did you make it happen or did you? Sometimes we take big swings at the goal and sometimes small ones but the part to remember is to keep on swinging.
That process to hang in there takes a good self image there will be good days and there will be not so good days but it’s how you handle that.
I agree that personal responsibility is a most important ethic to develop in your life. I’m sad to say that I see that lacking in a lot of people I know. Some are always looking to blame their problems or lack of success on external factors. Taking personal responsibility for outcomes in our lives is a first step to true success.
Marc,
this is something everyone and myself needed to hear. This points to the truth which sometimes hurts. We are accountable for ourselves. This hurts sometimes when we miss the mark on a project and look for others to blame.
This is a wake-up call if there is one. Marc you seem to catch us open with accepting this to have the real impact we need to get things in order.
It is always a pleasure to read your articles. There is something to learn from each of them. I look forward in your next one. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Marc,
Great article. It’s funny, as I was reading I was
thinking that even with all the training I have I
still have to catch myself when I start to blame
another or some circumstance. It takes practice and
diligence to be completely responsible for oneself.
The mirror is a great place to start. Stare deeply
into the eye of the one starring back at you. If
you don’t love what you see, it’s time to become
accountable.

So many times we quit one thing or another right before we strike gold.
By taking responsibility for our actions we are moving forward instead of backwards.
This is a great post with so many critical points for us all to take in! Thank you!
