Self Discipline: The Discipline Of Continuous Learning

“No one lives long enough to learn everything they need to learn starting from scratch. To be successful, we absolutely, positively have to find people who have already paid the price to learn the things that we need to learn to achieve our goals.” ~ Brian Tracy

Whether you work online or offline and you are looking for solutions to problems or if you have questions, the answers can usually be found when you are willing to learn and practice something new and different.

When you learn how to use the incredible power of your mind and you apply new ideas and information, you will be able to become a Leader in your field and gain the respect of those in your Industry.

We need to embrace never ending growth and development, continuous learning, and constant improvement. If you make the commitment to this discipline, you will be able to build a better self, team, organization, and world.

We can become exceptional at any skill if we are willing to learn, grow, improve and change. If you want to become more effective, we simply must continue to improve, not just maintain the status quo.

It takes a certain mindset to be able to remain on the path of continuous learning, but those that persevere will accomplish their goals and dreams and become Leaders in the field of their choice. The good news is that you can choose that path everyday….but, your first decision is to become a continuous learner.

So remember, you can’t get better results if you choose to apply your current knowledge and abilities. If you want to earn more in the future, you must learn and apply new methods and techniques.

In the following video by Brian Tracy, you will find out why it is so important to be a Continuous Learner…

YouTube Preview Image

According to Brian Tracy, there are nine disciplines you can develop that will improve every area of your life. We have learned that every exercise of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline at the same time, just as every weakness in self-discipline weakens you in other disciplines as well.

Now, let’s hear what Brian Tracy says as we focus on the Discipline Of Continuous Learning …

“To earn more you must learn more.”

  • Leaders Are Readers .. Read in your field 30-60 minutes each day. This will translate into one book per week, 50 books per year.
  • Listen And Learn… Listen to CD’s in your car as you drive from place to place. This will amount to 500-1000 hours per year.
  • Learn From The Experts… Attend seminars and take courses given by experts in your field. One idea from one course can save you years of hard work.
  • The average income in America increases at 3% per annum. With compound interest, the average person doubles their income every 22 years.
  • With the additional knowledge and skill you can apply to get better results, you increase your income at 10%, 15% and even 25% per year.

*10% per annum increase means that you double your income in 7.2 years.

*25% increase per annum means that you double your income in 2 years and 8 months.

  • Work on yourself as if your future depends on it, because it does.

Personal development and quality business training has never been more important than it is today.

Consider these facts:

  • The average person will increase their salary by only 2-3% annually.
  • Each year inflation increases by approximately 2-3% annually.
  • That means that, without lifelong learning, it’s virtually impossible for the average person to get ahead.

However…

  • Top Achievers, people who are continually learning and growing, DOUBLE their income every 3-5 years.
  • This is why the top 10-20% increase their incomes by an average of 11% annually and earn more than the bottom 80%!
  • To separate yourself from the pack, you often need to know just one additional skill…and that will make all the difference in your pay scale.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can immediately…

1) Make a plan to become a little bit better every single day. Learn and apply one new idea each day to help you to become more productive and effective at your work. The incremental effect will amaze you.

2)  Be patient. Don’t expect overnight changes or instant results. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare. Become a little bit better each day and your future will take care of itself.

  4. I could never understand people saying, ‘Oh, I’m too old to do that’. The minute we say this we’ve given up on life. Life’e essence is about learning and improving. No matter how old we get we can learn something new. In fact, it’s learning that keeps us feeling young, and learning that keeps that spark in our eyes which makes us appear young.

Very helpful article on continuous learning. I agreed with what you said.

  5. Hi Marc, I absolutely agree. We need to keep on learning new skills, especially in this day and age. The information age as it’s been established may times over, is an age of constant learning. As the Video clearly articulated, we can turn our cars into a mobile class room by listening to recorded programs that can teach us skills that we other wise would never learn. The great thing for me is that I’ve done this all my life and I can honestly say that it has paid off and will continue to be a benefit . I’m still learning and driving and I love it.

Thank you for confirming my belief in constant learning.

First time here. Great post. Couldn’t agree more with you. Learning continuously and consciously is the only way to get ahead.

I recently came across an article that was a real eye opener w.r.t continuous learning. The article basically said it takes 10 years of practice to become an expert in any field. The difference between me (ie. a layman) and an expert is any area is 10 years of devoted self learning and deliberate practice.

Enjoyed the post. Learning is just not for youngsters. We’re filling up our calendar to attend seminars in 2012. We’re taking a certification course in January and spending some time with our coach Rev. Anne Presuel. In March we’re with Suzanne Evans and In June Pamela Bruner. We glean something from them all. I hate to tell you about the books we have in various phases of completion. LOL. Guess my wife and I are continuous learners!

As you become older, it can be more difficult to absorb new information, so it is important to keep exercising those self discipline muscles so they continue to become stronger and we continue to learn and expand our horizons.

Well done on your certification course and all your training…keep up the great work.

It is a commitment that not everyone is willing to make.

  15. Hey Marc as usual a great great post. The very interesting thing that I have found is that I thought I was just fine before I discovered personal development. I thought I was smart. But I went in circle and never made any progress!

I actually did start doing some personal development way back in my Amway days in the middle 70′s but it didn’t occur to me why and it didn’t have the desired results. But I did like to read. I let the news and the tv make a lot of my decisions and convince me what my worth was. I went to college but again it didn’t make a serious change. Only when I came on line, now nearly 5 years ago did I seriously start learning, now I can’t get enough of it!

I’m so happy you enjoyed the post. Oh boy, I think we ALL got our start in Amway way back when. But, they did understand the significance of personal development and mindset, along with positive reinforcement and motivation.

Being online and having the access to so many skilled individuals and resources and just the power of the Internet really can accelerate the learning curve and expose us to so many new things.

It all starts with your personal growth and learning how to master self discipline. If you continue to learn new things and grow a little each day, we can accomplish anything we set our wonderful minds to.

The more we learn, the more we want to learn, because it allows us to achieve our goals and each time we do, it increases our confidence.

  20. Hi Marc! This blog post is music to my ears. I am a great advocate on continuous learning. Because I am the tool for my clients, I need that tool to be carefully cared for. Ergo, that is why I am always learning. Whatever I learn, I like to share with my readers and clients. There are so many aspects and learning curves, one has to take the most important one and spend time mastering it. In my field of self development I believe I am responsible for myself to keep on learning.
I joined a group that meets once a week about “Mindset” and “communication” and it is not an easy go. There is homework, digging into the deeper self, etc. But this is my passion and I do enjoy it.
I keep learning more and more in my niche, and keep close attention to the other aspects of my business.
Yes, we cannot know everything, but learning is a wonderful journey.
Whatever I don’t have time to learn that is important to my business, I farm out and let an expert in the field do.
Thanks for this post Marc, It is the key to self development!

I also love the fact that you used the word “Ergo”…haven’t seen that one in a while.

I agree with you 150% about your Mastermind participation, as it is a great way to continue to sharpen our skills. I belong to a group that meets once a week, too and it is an hour that I really look forward to. In these words, “We need to embrace never ending growth and development, continuous learning, and constant improvement.” you have shared an important message. . You can see the difference it makes when you compare the average achiever to the high achiever. The ideas that Brian Tracy shares in this video work. I know because I have been using these type of materials for several years. If we don’t have the Self Disciple it can be developed since it is not a trait but a skill.

Love this advice that you are sharing. Continuous Learning is the Prescription for overcoming temporary defeat and part of the formula for creating massive success.

When people ask me why are they struggling so much with their goals, I like to ask them a question:

    1. What are you Reading?
    2. What are you Watching?
    3. Who are you listening to?

Answering those three questions personally to yourself will tell you if you are on a path of personal development and growth- the path of continuous learning.
