Have You Decided Upon Your Definite Major Purpose ?

“Decide upon your major definite purpose in life and then organize all your activities around it.” ~ Brian Tracy

Before you start doing the things, such as the tasks required to start a business, I suggest you spend some time doing some serious thinking and planning.
But, not just setting specific goals, which is important… but think on a higher level, like career, purpose, lifestyle.

There is a very famous book by Napoleon Hill, called Think and Grow Rich

In his book, Hill presents his concept of the Definite Major Purpose. It was a challenge to his readers, to ask themselves in what do I truly believe?”

You need to define this, and make sure whatever business you decide to start, is aligned with this purpose. If your business is in some way aligned with your core values, or doing something you truly love, you will have passion in your work. Passion will always come through, and will greatly increase your chances to achieve success.

So, take some time for yourself and determine what your Definite Major Purpose is or should be to live the life you desire. Then start with a positive attitude and a mindset for success.

Watch this brief Brian Tracy “10 Goal Method” video, which is a great way to determine your Definite Major Purpose. After watching the video be sure to share your comments below, and feel free to pass this video on to friends and family.

Your major definite purpose can be defined as the one goal that is most important to you at the moment. It is usually the one goal that will help you to achieve more of your other goals than anything else you can accomplish. It must have the following characteristics:

1. It must be something that you personally really desire. Your desire for this goal must be so intense that the very idea of achieving your major purpose excites you and makes you happy.

2. It must be clear and specific. You must be able to define it in words. You must be able to write it down with such clarify that a child could read it and know exactly what it is that you want and be able to determine whether or not you have achieved it.

3. It must be measurable and quantifiable. Rather than “I want to make a lot of money,” it must be more like “I will earn $100,000 per year by (a specific date).”

4. It must be both believable and achievable. Your major definite purpose cannot be so big or so ridiculous that it is completely unattainable.

5. Your major definite purpose should have a reasonable probability of success, perhaps 50-50 when you begin. If you have never achieved a major goal before, set a goal that has an 80 percent or 90 percent probability of success. Give yourself a break and take it easy on yourself, at least at the beginning.

Later on, you can set huge goals with very small probabilities of success and you will still be motivated to take the steps necessary to achieve them. But in the beginning, set goals that are believable and achievable and that have a high probability of success so that you can gain confidence of winning right from the start.

6. Your major definite purpose must be in harmony with your other goals. You cannot want to be financially successful in your career on the one hand and play golf most of the time on the other. Your major definite purpose must be in harmony with your minor goals and aligned with your values.

Now that you understand HOW your “Definite Major Purpose” is defined, it is time to Decide WHAT your “Definite Major Purpose” is and the steps that you must take to achieve your “greatest goal.”

  3. Hi Marc,

inspiring combination of wisdom and the short video.

The question “in what do I truly believe?” seems like a great one to ask ourselves, since if we are not in line with our own values, when we pursue goals, we won’t be very efficient.

I like the suggestion of Brian Tracey to write ten goals and ask the question he suggests.

Thank you so much for sharing this.
    Cheers,

  5. Hi Marc,

Good recap of Hill’s steps. I am always amazed when talking to people who claimed that they have studied Think and Grow Rich yet, when we talk about their statement of definite purpose, they never did that. Even some of my coaching group members who invest good money and time in study often bypass this step in spite of my stressing how important it is. We cannot negotiate the price of success! If we do, we will come up short, frustrated, and discouraged.

Napoleon Hill talks about how important defining our definite major purpose is and being specific about what we are doing. We must not skip this exercise.

    • Hi Rachel,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your comment…it is greatly appreciated.

You are so right, this is an essential step in your overall success.

Many people think that if they have all this information in their head, that is all they need.

But, it must be written, with clarity, be specific and repeated every day and you must take ACTION on a daily basis to move you closer to that major purpose each day.

For those that have read “Think and Grow Rich” and haven’t written their statement of definite purpose, they must join a Mastermind group, so they really understand how essential it is and have the help and support to create and achieve it.

      To your continued success,
      Marc

  6. Without having a major purpose in life it is like being adrift in a boat with no paddles and fishing poles. The water might be calm and relaxing, but you get nowhere fast and will eventually die of hunger without any support.

  7. Hmmm, think and grow rich…Sounds inviting! I agree, Marc, that in order to know our major purpose and concentrate our efforts around it, we first have to acknowledge our goals. What we want to accomplish has to be achievable and believable. We must visualize what we want, because if we do not do it, we cannot know what we want our final goal to be like.

  8. Great post and advice Marc. Personally I believe finding our passion is like a really great road trip with lots of scenic outlooks and a few detours here and there. I think Think and Grow Rich is a wonderful tool to help get people on the right path and then it’s a matter of getting out there on the road! Thanks for the inspiration.

  9. Hi Marc! your word can aspire many readers. If you want to achieve your goals, you must also face the consequences in life. Prioritizing all of your achievements can help you to become successful. Don’t be easily deceive by challenges, instead make it as a priority in life.

  10. Hey Marc,
I will continue to believe that the only way to achieve success as each person has determined it to be. Is with only focusing on their passion and sharing it globally which generates revenue. That is true joy and it will be helping others with all the positive messages being shared.

I love artist and how their minds transforms thoughts into feels on canvas for all to see. That is how the world should be perceived as your giant canvas and its here for you to pain your passion.

Marc, this is a wonderful presentation of one of our greats. I love your find and look forward in being empowered to help more people by such usable content.

  12. Hi Marc… One of the toughest challenges for me is to narrow down my goals to ONE. I have too many interests, and too many things that have to be done. This is not only a matter of perspective… they really are important. A couple of years ago I narrowed it down to three, but that’s still too many. I’m not focused enough, and therefore not making steady, consistent progress toward any of them. This video makes my ONE major goal stand out magically from all the rest, and shows me where the other two main ones fit in the overall scheme of things.

    Thanks for posting!

You discussed our definite purpose in life and you also listed 6 important characteristics of developing your definite purpose. This is one of the most important things we do, not only in our business but in our personal lives too. We have to look beyond ourselves and understand our place in the fantastic quilt of life. I designed my definite purpose of life but I call it my ultimate purpose and mission of life. I used your guidelines as a check to see if my ultimate purpose satisfied each point. It does! Here are 6 guidelines you listed when developing our purpose:

    1. It must be something that you personally really desire.
    2. It must be clear and specific.
    3. It must be measurable and quantifiable.
